The Registrar General's department was formed for registration of birth , marriages and deaths of the populace Sri Lankan and legal documents pertaining to properties, with a view to safeguarding their fundamental rights.

This department was initially established in 1864 for the purpose of registration of land and entrusted with civil registration i . e births, marriages and deaths in 1867.

Civil registration acftivites have been decentralized upto the divisional secretariat level and accordingly a distric registrar's division is operating in every divisional secretariat

Land registration process is carried out at the district level and 42 land registries have been established for the purpose

The registrar general's department is operating under the ministry of public admnistration and home affairs.

New recruitments to Grade III of the Registrar Service ( 2008-07-16)
Granting of appointments to 149 new recruits to Grade III of the Registrar Service was taken place at the pensioner’s holiday resort auditorium, Wedamulla,Kalaniya on 24th of July 2008. These new Additional District Registrars have been attached to fill the vacancies prevalent at the Divisional Secretaries and the Land Registries in the island. Hon. Minister of Public Administration & Home Affairs Karu Jayasuriya participated in this event.
A New Location for RGD( 2008-07-09)
Registrar General’s Department has been shifted to the newly constructed building , situated at No 234 /A3 ,Densil Kobbakaduwa Mawatha,Baththaramulla since 01 of Jun 2008.All duties of the department are now performing at the new building .If you have any questions & inquiries, please send through FAQ.
Delkandha new land registry building was declared opened ( 2008-04-10)
Delkandha new land registry building was declared opened by Hon Karu Jayasuriya ,the minister of Public Administration & Home affairs on 04th of April 2008 .The old land registry building which was operating at Anagarika Dharmapala Mawath,Dehiwala was in poor condition. Due to inadequate facilities and difficulties faced by both officers and the general public in performing duties, it had to be shifted to the new building which situated at Delkandha junction. According to the new programme which is going to be launched at the end of this month , all functions & activities in the office will be automated.
