The Registrar General's department was formed for registration of birth , marriages and deaths of the populace Sri Lankan and legal documents pertaining to properties, with a view to safeguarding their fundamental rights.

This department was initially established in 1864 for the purpose of registration of land and entrusted with civil registration i . e births, marriages and deaths in 1867.

Civil registration acftivites have been decentralized upto the divisional secretariat level and accordingly a distric registrar's division is operating in every divisional secretariat

Land registration process is carried out at the district level and 42 land registries have been established for the purpose

The registrar general's department is operating under the ministry of public admnistration and home affairs.

E-Population Registry Project.

Aim of the project is to create a database which contains information regarding all residents in Sri Lanka.

Title Registration Programme (Bimsaviya).

Title registration has been commenced in areas such as Gampaha, Negambo, Rathnapura, Gampola, Anuradhapura, Homagama, Delkada, Kurunegala, Kandy and Hambanthota by the Title Registration Act No.21 of 1998

GIC National Conference-2010 ( 2010-08-31)
Registrar General’s Department was received an award in appreciation of the services rendered to society through the Government Information Centre(1919) at the GIC National Conference on 30th day of September 2010. The Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka was assisted in doing this task successfully.
Problem solving Workshop (Mobile Service) – Mullaitivu District( 2010-08-30)
A Problem solving Workshop (mobile service) will held to solve problems prevailing in the Maritime Pattu and Oddusuddan Divisional Secretariats on 1st of September at Vidyananda College, Mullaiyawalai and on 3rd of September at Oddusuddan MV, Oddusuddan. Registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths and issue of copies of such certificates will carry out in this program. Senior staff officers of the Department will participate in this event.
Mobile Service Program - Kegalle District ( 2010-07-19)
A mobile service program was held on 17th & 18th of July 2010 in Kegalle district sponsored by the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs. Issue of 127 certified copies of birth certificates, registration of 123 past births and 8 amendments in birth certificates were done during the program. Senior staff officers of the Department were attended to this program.
