History

This department which has been established in the year 1864 with a heritage of a proud history of 160 years, through our mission by registering of legal documents pertaining to movable and immovable properties and registration of titles in Sri Lanka and registration of marriages ,births and deaths , the primary domestic events of the populace; the preservation of such documents and the issue of certified copies there from at request and thereby assisting the populace to protect their rights, is our mission.

Even though , registration of marriages ,births and deaths , the primary domestic events of the populace are being carried out from the year 1867, for the supply of more expeditious service and for convenient to fulfill the activities easily, the civil registration activities are decentralized to divisional secretary divisions.

The service for the general public is provided by the 50 District Registrar’s offices established throughout the Island for registration of documents and title and one of the duties assigned to this department is to registration of land titles under Land Title Settlement Act, No.21 of 1998.
