Structure

  • Administration and supervision of land and title registration
    • 50 land registration offices have been established Island wide and administration and supervision of the same offices is done under this division.
  • Appointing and supervision of Notaries
    • Activities such as appointing , resigning ,suspension from the service , changing jurisdiction zones of the attorney-at –law and non- attorney-at-law notaries and maintaining their personal files are carried out under this division.
      • Relevant activities of issuance of licenses for additional languages, temporary suspension and resume of notary duties , activities relevant to change the official addresses ,private address of the notaries and duties relevant to amendment of the names of notaries.
      • Updating the notary directory annually.
  • Registration and cancellation of attorney licenses
    • Registration and cancellation of attorney licenses are done by the regional offices and district assistant Registrar General’s offices of the Registrar General’s department situated in the Island.
      Registration of Documents

      Immovable and movable properties

      Registration of immovable properties

      • A document written and signed before two witnesses and a licensed Notary Public by the parties in relation to the transactions carry out relevant to lands is introduced as a deed.·
      • Various types of deeds relevant to lands are forwarded for registration. All those documents can be registered from the land registry which is the relevant lands is located.

      Registration of movable properties 

      • Movable properties ,that is vehicles, stock of goods of a business, receipts of imported goods or exported goods , mortgages relevant to book debts can be registered under movable properties..
      • Registration activities can be done by the land registry belonging to the area that the relevant property has been established.

        Registration of instruments

        Activity

        Registration of transactions relevant to movable and immovable properties is performed by the Registrar General’s department. 50 land registry offices have been established Island wide for that purpose.

        Documents

        Documents shall be written and attested in accordance with the provisions of the Documents Registration Ordinance and Notary Ordinance.

        Duty Hours

        8.30 am to 3.45 pm on week days.( cash counter is opened only up to 3.00 pm)

        Office is not opened on Saturdays, Sundays and public holydays.

        Presenting instrument for registration.

        Instruments shall be presented for registration to the land registry which is belonging to the area that the land situated ,mentioned in the document . An instrument which affects land or movable property situated in more districts than one may be presented for registration to the Head office of the Registrar General’s department.

        Instruments can be forwarded for registration through the following methods.                                                      a.
