Registering legal documents related to documents registration, registering land titles in Sri Lanka, registering vital life events such as marriages, births, and deaths, conserving those documents, and issuing certified copies of them upon request, thereby assisting the public in protecting their rights.
The Registrar General's Department was established under the Land, Registration, Ordinance No. 08 of 1863 with the objective of registering the ownership of lands located in Sri Lanka and registering documents of disputed lands.
However, until then government was ready to register land ownership, the registration of legal documents related to lands commenced in January 1864. The civil registration process in Sri Lanka was initiated in 1867, and the responsibility for these functions was subsequently transferred to this Department in 1958. This Department was established to achieve the core objectives of registering land titles, maintaining legal documentation related to lands, and managing civil registrations.
