The inauguration ceremony for issuing digital National Birth Certificates under the e-Civil Registration program introduced by the Registrar General's Department was held today (24) at the auditorium of the Ratnapura Divisional Secretariat. The ceremony was presided over by Mr. K.G.S. Nishantha, District Secretary/Government Agent of Ratnapura and Additional Registrar General.
Children born in the Ratnapura District from January 1, 2021, to February 26, 2025, will be able to obtain this National Birth Certificate from any Divisional Secretariat within the district. The Registrar General's Department expects to further expand this service in the future.
This digital National Birth Certificate is a modern, secure document compared to the traditional paper certificate. Since the information is stored in a database in an unalterable manner, the possibility of producing forged documents is minimized. In addition, it is highly suitable for international use, including foreign travel and legal procedures, and the certificate is available in Sinhala and English or Tamil and English. This eliminates the need for separate translations of the birth certificate. Furthermore, any amendment made to the certificate is updated in real-time within the database.
