Obtaining of certified copies of a Marriage Certificate
Online Applications
You can apply online for a copy of a marriage certificate by visiting https://online.ebmd.rgd.gov.lk. For more information visit.
The copies of the marriage certificate shall be obtained from the Divisional Secretariat belonging to the place of which the marriage occurred
If the relevant certificate is included in the data system, a certified copy therein can be obtained from any Divisional Secretariat nearby you as well.
- Copies of certificates from 1960.01.01 to 2023.12.31 can be obtained through the system. (You can check and verify whether it is available in the database from the Divisional Secretariat closest to you.)
The required application form can be obtained from the District Registrar Division of any Divisional Secretariat or from the website of this Department. ![]()
Fees Charged,
- When the marriage certificate number, the registered division, and the date of registration are known - the fee is Rs. 120.00 per copy.
- If the marriage certificate number and the date of registration are not known, (as a search of records for a period not exceeding two years is required) - the fee is Rs. 250.00 per copy. For an additional copy, it is Rs. 120.00.
Certified copies can be requested by paying the relevant fee to the Divisional Secretariat or to the Registrar General's Bank of Ceylon (Battaramulla Branch) Account No. 7039827, and submitting the receipt (Bank Slip) provided there along with the duly completed application form to the relevant Divisional Secretariat. Payments made via Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) or Online payments will not be accepted.
If the marriage certificate needs to be received by post, a stamped, self-addressed envelope must be submitted along with the application form and the payment receipt as indicated above.
If the marriage is registered, the requested number of copies of the relevant marriage certificate will be issued according to the amount paid, and if the marriage is not registered, you will be notified via the B38 form.

- Duly completed application form
- The original copy of the document to be translated or a certified copy obtained from a Divisional Secretariat
- If obtaining by post, in addition to the above requirements, a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

- Any number of translated copies can be obtained
